Ford Escape: Exhaust System / Removal and Installation - Muffler and Tailpipe - Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle (FHEV)

Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

  1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
    Refer to: Jacking and Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting - 2.5L Duratec – Hybrid (121kW/164PS) (BG)) .
  1. If equipped.
    Position aside the electrical connector shield.
  1. If equipped.
    Disconnect the electrical connector.
  1. If equipped.
    1. Use hose clamp pliers to arrest the coolant leak from the hose.
      Use the General Equipment: Hose Clamp(s)
    1. Release the clamps and remove the hoses from the heat exhanger.
    1. Remove and discard the clamp.
    1. Remove the isolator bracket studs and the muffler and tailpipe assembly.

Isolator hanger bracket

NOTE: The below following step is only necessary if you are replacing the isolator hanger bracket.

    1. NOTE: Left-hand side shown, right-hand side is similar.

      Remove the isolator bracket studs.
      Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
    1. Detach the isolator and remove the bracket.

Installation

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    1. Position the muffler and tailpipe assembly in the vehicle and install the isolator bracket studs.
      Torque: 18 lb.ft (25 Nm)
    1. NOTE: Make sure that the clamp is installed to the same orientation as when removed.

      NOTE: Make sure that new clamp is installed.

      Install the new clamp.
      Torque: 17 lb.ft (23 Nm)
  1. Check the exhaust system for leaks.
  1. Check and fill the coolant to the maximum level.
    Refer to: Engine Cooling System Draining, Vacuum Filling and Bleeding (303-03C) .
