HUD
Brightness Controls
The HUD display illumination is controlled by two sets of inputs: the base HUD background and driver selectable illumination level. The base HUD background display uses ambient lighting of the road ahead of the vehicle and an overall vehicle backlighting dimming level to determine the display illumination level. The driver then has the ability to select a desired illumination level, which is selectable through the HUD menu. When a forward collision warning event is in progress, the illumination intensity is increased to provide an increased level of severity to the visual warning.
The HUD module uses the following inputs to control the illumination brightness:
The HUD uses an internal ambient light sensor to determine the illumination level of the display. The end-point of the light guide is forward-facing. The light sensor can be cleaned with caution, but cannot be repaired or replaced separately from the HUD .
Once the HUD has established a base illumination level, the driver can then select a desired illumination level. When the driver has selected to change the intensity level, the IPC sends the HUD brightness menu message to the HUD module over the HS-CAN3 to open the brightness menu. The driver can then change the intensity level using the menu options.
Display Adjustments
The HUD provides adjustment settings to allow the driver to adjust the vertical position and size of the display to provide better viewing. The adjustments allow for vertical position adjustment of the blue display frame and vertical size adjustment through the HUD menu.
The HUD module receives the HUD settings active and HUD adjustment menu request messages from the IPC over the HS-CAN3 .
The HUD module receives the steering wheel message center and HUD switch data message from the GWM over the HS-CAN3 .
The GWM receives the steering wheel message center and HUD switch data message from the SCCM over the HS-CAN2 .
Display Controls
The HUD display controls are through the RH steering wheel switch. The HUD module receives all switch control inputs from the GWM over the HS-CAN3 . The GWM receives the steering wheel message center and HUD switch data message from the SCCM over the HS-CAN2 .
Engineering Test Mode
To enter the HUD engineering test mode, begin with the ignition OFF. Press and hold the RH steering wheel switch OK button. Place the ignition ON and continue to hold the button for approximately 10 seconds until the HUD displays ETM in the upper LH corner of HUD image. Release the OK button within 5 seconds of ETM being displayed. Press the up or down arrow buttons to navigate through each of the display windows. To exit the HUD engineering test mode, place the ignition in OFF.
English/Metric, Language And Unit Selections
The HUD English/metric, language and unit selections are controlled by messages sent from IPC . The IPC is the controlling module for the English/metric, language and unit selections and is based on the driver selections. The IPC and the HUD English/metric, language and unit selections are displayed the same.
The HUD module receives the language selection and trip unit selection from the IPC over the HS-CAN3 .
HUD Displays
Cruise Control/ACC
The ACC display provides the set speed (shown to the right of the ACC RTT indicator) and the distance gap setting and lead vehicle graphic (shown in the center of the HUD display).
The HUD module receives all messages required to control the cruise control/ ACC displays from the GWM over the HS-CAN3 .
The GWM receives the adaptive cruise control gap distance display, adaptive cruise control target distance display and adaptive cruise control warning request messages from the IPMA over the HS-CAN2 .
The GWM receives the cruise control set speed and the cruse control status messages from the PCM over the HS-CAN1 .
Distance Alert
The active driver assist display provides a distance alert to indicate the distance to the vehicle in front and visually provide a warning when the vehicle is too close. The graphical distance display on the road becomes a solid image that changes color based on the distance to the vehicle in front. As the vehicle approaches a distance requiring an alert, the display turns from gray to amber to red.
The HUD module receives the adaptive cruise control target distance display message from the GWM over the HS-CAN3 . The GWM receives the adaptive cruise control target distance display message from the IPMA over the HS-CAN2 .
Forward Collision Alert
The forward collision alert is part of the adaptive cruise control/pre-collision assist system, and provides a warning display when the system determines a forward collision event is imminent, and driver intervention is required. The HUD module receives the forward collision warning request message from the GWM over the HS-CAN3 . The GWM receives the forward collision warning request message from the IPMA over the HS-CAN2 .
Lane Centering Assist
The HUD provides a lane centering indicator in the center display along with the adaptive cruise control and lane keeping system displays. The displays indicate the system is active or cancelled, or notifies the driver when intervention is required.
The HUD module receives the traffic jam assist status display and traffic jam assist warning request messages from the GWM over the HS-CAN3 . The GWM receives the traffic jam assist status display and traffic jam assist warning request messages from the IPMA over the HS-CAN2 .
Lane Keeping System
The
lane keeping system combines the lane keeping alert and lane keeping
aid systems. The lane keeping alert system alerts the driver of
unintentional drifting outside of the lane and the lane keeping aid
system corrects the vehicle steering to keep the vehicle in the lane.
The HUD provides a lane keeping
display with a view of the vehicle in the center of a lane with right
and left lane markers to indicate the vehicle position with relation to
the lane markings on either side of the vehicle. The lane markers change
color based on the system status with regard to vehicle position within
the lane and any required intervention to keep the vehicle in the lane.
For additional information on the lane keeping system operation,
Refer to: Lane Keeping System (419-07 Lane Keeping System)
.
The HUD module receives the camera configuration and lane keeping system status display messages from the GWM over the HS-CAN3 .
The GWM receives the camera configuration and lane keeping system status display messages from the IPMA over the HS-CAN2 .
Digital Speedometer
The HUD provides a digital speed display in the lower center of the display to indicate vehicle speed. The HUD module receives the vehicle speed display and metric display messages from the IPC over the HS-CAN3 .
Navigation And Phone
The HUD provides turn by turn navigation and incoming phone call
information. For additional audio, navigation and phone information,

Component Description
HUD Combiner Screen
The HUD combiner screen is located in the driver side instrument panel. The screen is a semi-transparent mirror that reshapes the light rays from the internal TFT display to illuminate a virtual display within the driver's sight, approximately 2 meters (7 feet) forward of the driver, above the vehicle's hood. The screen can be raised or lowered to adjust the reflected virtual image vertically, using the RH steering wheel switch. The combiner screen is part of the HUD module, but can be serviced separately.
HUD Module
The HUD provides the driver with an alternative to view driver information and forward collision warnings. The HUD module receives all messages on the HS-CAN3 . Whenever a new HUD is installed, the HUD module requires a PMI .
HUD Control - Steering Wheel Switch
The HUD menu functions are controlled through the RH upper steering wheel switch up and down toggle switch and back buttons. The RH steering wheel switch uses different resistance values associated with each specific button. The SCCM sends out a reference voltage to the RH steering wheel switch on the input circuit and monitors the voltage drops. The voltage drop varies depending upon the resistance of the specific button pressed, providing indication to the SCCM which button is pressed.
Switching the Ignition Off
When the ignition is on or in accessory mode, press the push button ignition switch once without your foot on the brake pedal.
