Ford Escape: Power Steering / Removal and Installation - Steering Gear
Removal

Remove the front subframe.
Refer to: Front Subframe (502-00 Uni-Body, Subframe and Mounting System, Removal and Installation).

Remove and discard the steering gear retainers.

Position the steering gear to the RH side then remove it from the front subframe.

NOTE:
This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
Remove the retainers and the steering gear shield.
Installation

NOTE:
Hand start retainers.
With all retainers finger tightened, complete the
tightening sequence, as shown below. Stage 1 on each retainer then stage
2.

Position the steering gear.

Tighten the steering gear retainers.
Torque:
Stage 1:
52 lb.ft (70 Nm)
Stage 2:
120°

NOTE:
This step is only necessary when installing a new component.
Install the steering gear shield and the retainers.
Torque:
80 lb.in (9 Nm)

Install the front subframe.
