Ford Escape: Rear Drive Axle/Differential / General Procedures - Differential Draining and Filling
Draining

With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
Refer to: Jacking and Lifting - Overview (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation).

Remove and discard the RDU fluid fill plug.

Remove and discard the RDU fluid drain plug and allow the RDU fluid to drain.
Filling

NOTE:
Make sure that a new component is installed.
Install the RDU fluid drain plug.
Torque:
30 lb.ft (40 Nm)

Fill the RDU with clean RDU fluid.
Refer to: Specifications (205-02 Rear Drive Axle/Differential, Specifications).

Check the RDU fluid level. The RDU fluid level should be 2mm (0.079 in)
below the bottom of filler hole opening. If required, top-off the RDU
with clean RDU fluid.

NOTE:
Make sure that a new component is installed.
Install the RDU fluid fill plug.
Torque:
21 lb.ft (29 Nm)

Wheel-to-hub optimization is important. Clearance between
the wheel and hub can be used to offset or neutralize the Road Force® or
run-out of the wheel and tire assembly. For every 0.001 inch of
wheel-to-hub clearance, the Road Force® can be affected between 1 and 3
pounds depending on the tire stiffness.

keypad with the master access code at
any time. The master access code is on the
owner’s wallet card in the glove box and
is available from an authorized dealer.
Displaying the Master Access Code
To display the factory-set code in the
information display:

Remove the rubber mat.
Insert the first programmed key in the
backup slot.
Press the push button ignition switch
once and wait a few seconds.
Press the push button ignition switch
again and remove the key.
Within 10 seconds, place a second
programmed intelligent access key in
the backup slot and press the push
button ignition switch.
