Ford Escape: Body Closures / Removal and Installation - Liftgate
Removal
NOTE:
Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

Open the liftgate.
-
Remove the high mounted stoplamp.
Refer to: High Mounted Stoplamp (417-01 Exterior Lighting, Removal and Installation).

Remove the liftgate trim panel.
Refer to: Liftgate Trim Panel (501-05 Interior Trim and Ornamentation, Removal and Installation).

Remove the C-pillar trim panel.
Refer to: C-Pillar Trim Panel (501-05 Interior Trim and Ornamentation, Removal and Installation).

Release the clips.
-
Lower the rear headliner.
-

Disconnect the electrical connectors.
-
Remove the fastener.
Torque:
97 lb.in (11 Nm)

Route the washer hose through the liftgate opening
-
Remove the grommet and route the harness out of the liftgate.
-
Mark the location of the liftgate hinge.
-
NOTE:
This step requires the aid of another technician.
Remove the clips holding the liftgate strut or the power liftgate motor and position aside.

NOTE:
This step requires the aid of another technician.
Remove the bolts and the liftgate.
Torque:
22 lb.ft (30 Nm)
Installation

To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Align the liftgate as necessary.
Refer to: Liftgate Alignment (501-03 Body Closures, General Procedures).
Vehicles with power liftgate

Perform the power liftgate initialization.
Refer to: Power Liftgate Initialization (501-03 Body Closures, General Procedures).
Removal
With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.

Drill the rivets, release the tabs and remove the lower rear bumper cover valence
Disconnect the hands-free liftgate actuation upper sensor electrical connector...
Removal
Remove the liftgate trim panel.

What Is the Master Access Code
The master access code is a factory-set
five-digit entry code. You can operate the
keypad with the master access code at
any time. The master access code is on the
owner’s wallet card in the glove box and
is available from an authorized dealer.
Displaying the Master Access Code
To display the factory-set code in the
information display:

Remove the rubber mat.
Insert the first programmed key in the
backup slot.
Press the push button ignition switch
once and wait a few seconds.
Press the push button ignition switch
again and remove the key.
Within 10 seconds, place a second
programmed intelligent access key in
the backup slot and press the push
button ignition switch.
