Ford Escape: Body Closures / Removal and Installation - Liftgate

Removal

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

1. Open the liftgate.
   

1. Remove the high mounted stoplamp.
   Refer to: High Mounted Stoplamp (417-01 Exterior Lighting, Removal and Installation).
   

1. Remove the liftgate trim panel.
   Refer to: Liftgate Trim Panel (501-05 Interior Trim and Ornamentation, Removal and Installation).
   

1. Remove the C-pillar trim panel.
   Refer to: C-Pillar Trim Panel (501-05 Interior Trim and Ornamentation, Removal and Installation).
   

1. 1. Release the clips.
      
   2. Lower the rear headliner.
      

1. • Disconnect the electrical connectors.
     
   • Remove the fastener.
     Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)

1. Route the washer hose through the liftgate opening
   

1. Remove the grommet and route the harness out of the liftgate.
   

1. Mark the location of the liftgate hinge.
   

1. NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

   Remove the clips holding the liftgate strut or the power liftgate motor and position aside.
   

1. NOTE: This step requires the aid of another technician.

   Remove the bolts and the liftgate.
   Torque: 22 lb.ft (30 Nm)

Installation

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
   

1. Align the liftgate as necessary.
   Refer to: Liftgate Alignment (501-03 Body Closures, General Procedures).
   

Vehicles with power liftgate

1. Perform the power liftgate initialization.
   Refer to: Power Liftgate Initialization (501-03 Body Closures, General Procedures).
